Setting the Gold Standard in Special Education

Representatives from the California Department of Education and Los Angeles Unified School District said they were “blown away” by the quality of distance education that Wayfinder is providing to students in its Special Education School during the pandemic. Our school enrolls children and youth, ages 5 to 22, who are visually impaired or have moderate-to-severe disabilities.

We are so proud of this achievement because many children with special needs have been left behind during the pandemic, according to researchers. Our school’s accomplishment is a testament to the partnership between our educators and students’ parents and caregivers, who juggled work, teaching, and care to ensure their children continued to learn.

The reviewers were astonished at the variety and quality of distance-learning options students are receiving during the pandemic. The reviewers commented on the happiness and high level of engagement in an online physical education class they observed.

“At our exit meeting, they said we set the gold standard,” said Nancy Berger, school principal. Congratulations to our parents, students and educators, whose collaboration and flexibility made this achievement possible.
